Who Am I?

I’m a Texas boy, through and through- raised rabbits for 4-H in high school and spent many nights helping cousins raise heifers and clean stalls. I am most comfortable in a pair of blue jeans and boots, both of which you’ll see at some point. As a kid, I frequently lugged around the family’s camcorder. My desire to tell stories started at family events and holidays. Recruiting my younger brother as a cameraman, I’d interview nearly anyone including friends and teachers.

I’m a proud “junior.” My dad, Mike Sr., is an Assistant Fire Chief for the Port of Houston Fire Department and retired as a paramedic/firefighter from the fire department in his hometown of Humble, TX. My mom, Debbie, works in real estate in the Greater Humble area and my brother, Scott, is a Proud Fightin’ Texas Aggie, Class of 2012.

IMAG1298I got my start in television at KBTX-TV in Bryan, TX. I started working as a part-time photographer while I was attending Sam Houston State University. In 2009, I graduated and took a full-time job as a photographer. I was blessed to work for a great News Director, Mike George, who saw the potential underneath all my nervous questions. He encouraged me to set my goals high, but kept me grounded when I drifted away. He passed away suddenly in April 2014 and I try to live up to the journalist he saw in me every day.

While at KBTX-TV, I went from photographer to reporter to producer. In 2011, I took over the co-anchor seat on Brazos Valley This Morning. As the number one morning show in the market, BVTM taught me a lot about community and people. Morning shows are almost like alarm clocks. I loved every minute of waking up my friends and neighbors. Football reigns in Texas, and Texas A&M football is king in College Station. For three seasons, I produced the award-winning pregame show “Aggie Gameday,” which broadcast live from Kyle Field each Aggie home game. I was nominated for a Lone Star EMMY for my work as that show’s producer.

20140711_070238In 2014, I was honored to receive an EMMA for my work as a reporter, covering veterans’ issues and breaking news in the Brazos Valley. I was also nominated for a Lone Star EMMY for my half-hour special dedicated to the next step veterans face when they come back home from active duty.

When not at work, I can be found exploring the community or running a trail. I’m an avid fan of television and spend plenty of time watching it (I excuse it as “work-related” activity). I’m also a big fan of music, which helped when I worked a wedding DJ. I spent almost 14 years in the wedding and party industry, and continue to work with brides on crafting their special day.

I’m a proud Bearkat graduate of Sam Houston State University with a degree in Mass Communications.

I’m very excited to join the team at WIAT 42 News as a reporter. I’m looking forward to getting to know the Birmingham area, and tell the stories that matter to you. My passion for listening and sharing stories is what motivates me and each day brings a new story.
